  • The internet now attracts more than 4.5 of the world’s 8 billion population.
  • Global average time spent online per day: 6 hours and 43 minutes.

  • Social media use is outpacing population growth almost 9 to 1.

Author insights

“If we allow roughly 8 hours a day for sleep, that means we currently spend more than 40 percent of our waking lives using the internet,” wrote report author Simon Kemp. He’s the CEO of Kepios, a marketing consulting agency.

Kemp compiled essential insights into how people around the world use the internet, mobile devices, social media and e-commerce.

After publishing hundreds of pages of data, Kemp offered this tip: “Don’t just rely on research; go out onto the web and into social media and watch what’s happening for yourself.”

Social media management platform Hootsuite offered its own perspective.

I’m not surprised by the data contained in this report about the digital landscape. It really confirms a lot of what I have already known and I am grateful for that which means I am going in the right direction.

This was a really interesting read, thanks for sharing!

It is unbelievable yet very believable that people spend around 7 hours a day on the web! I always enjoy the data that you share.

Of course, global digital engagements are on rise, everything is on internet now. What not, everyone is online to interact, socialise, do business, shop, order groceries etc. People don’t have a life without internet, disconnect them from internet and see how it effects them.

I know I definitely spend a ton of my day online. It is pretty much necessary for my business. I think as technology advances we will be spending more and more time. Shopping, browsing, watching content, playing games, etc.

Very informative and I am not surprised by this one bit. It seems like we spend a lot of our waking hours on the internet. All you have to do is look around and you will see a lot of people looking at their phones. What’s really scary is seeing people distracted by their phones when driving!

The internet is an entirely different world. It has truly taken over the actual world itself, as everywhere you look you seem someone on their cell phone. I went to a restaurant the other day and I noticed everyone around me was looking at their phone. It is almost depressing to see because when I was a child, technology didn’t exist on this level that people find their phone more important than their families sitting with them.

Hootsuite has it right. You have to change with the times, but some things never change. As long as you keep those core values of customer satisfaction, you’ll be able to roll with the changes.

I can’t say this is a surprise to me. When you think about everything the internet encompasses, I’m surprised it’s not more actually. We shop, game, go on social media, manage our businesses, do homework, and ton more online.
